Chamada de trabalhos / CALL FOR PAPERS

Terræ: the new journal for the
Earth Sciences communities

Terræ is the new journal of the IGe-UNICAMP dedicated to the geological and geographical communities in Brazil and other countries. The goal of this publication is to promote original knowledge, creativity, and innovation in Earth Sciences, Geography, and other related fields of the environmental sciences.

This journal is available at our web site www.ige.unicamp.br/terrae free of charge and in its printed version is being distributed to academics, professionals, students, institutional libraries, companies and non-governmental organizations involved with Geology, Geography and Environmental Studies.

Because one of the objectives of the new publication is to enhance communication between Brazilian geoscientists and geographers and their peers from other countries, the scientific articles along with other material are published in English. However, a link called Terræ Didatica, now under construction, will contain scientific, teaching material and support information written in Portuguese in order to make communication easier with a broader public in the country.

The Editorial Executive Committee, on the behalf of the Institute of Geosciences, wishes to express its gratitude to the scientists and professionals who accepted the invitation to join the Editorial Board of the journal. The role of the Editorial Board is twofold: (i) to assure the high standard of the scientific articles and communications, and (ii) to improve the structure of this new publication which will evolve during the next years mainly based on criticism and suggestions provided by the readers and taken into consideration by the Editorial Board.

In this first printed issue of Terræ there are articles in the thematic form and research articles containing new research results of international significance. The emerging discipline Medical Geology as well as the use of lead isotopes in environmental studies are focused on. Both geological and geographical views of other themes such as Environment and Health, Climate Change, Geosciences for Urban Development, Geotechnologies and Mineral Resources will be welcomed for publication in forthcoming issues.

Additionally, scientific communications containing partial results of ongoing projects, scientific reviews or discussions of scientific methodologies and research programs, reviews of books and other scientific materials as well as reports on conferences, courses and field trips can also be accepted.

This first issue also coincides with two important events for our Institute. In September 2004 the Institute celebrated its 25 Year Jubilee and the two decades since our first graduate courses started. How the Institute of Geosciences evolved from the original ideas of Zeferino Vaz, one of UNICAMP’s founders, and Amilcar Herrera, our first Director, until the current stage of excellence is the subject of the following article written by the present Institute’s directors.

Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to Professor Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, Rector of UNICAMP, for having encouraged this challenging initiative. (Editorial Executive Committee)
