Cartography of territorial uses in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (SP): contributions for planning and territorial management
Description:
The Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC) is made up of 20 municipalities, has a territorial extension of 3,792 km2 and constitutes one of the most dynamic metropolitan spaces in Brazilian territory, concentrating important socioeconomic activities. The region has experienced a marked urbanization process in recent decades, with an average rate above 97% and a population greater than three million inhabitants. The spatial configuration of the uses of the territory, resulting from the various processes with which social relations of production occur in different locations, as a mark of the uneven and combined historical development of capitalist relations of production in this metropolitan space, configure diverse expressions in the regional landscape. In the search for understanding this intertwined and contradictory process, it is necessary to map and understand the spatial configuration resulting from the different strategies of hegemonic agents producing geographic space in the conduct of public policies and/or private actions aimed at appropriating metropolitan space in accordance with the needs of the general process of reproduction of capital, which occurs amid the degradation of the quality of life of part of the population and the socio-environmental characteristics of the region. This project’s main objective is to analyze the production process of metropolitan space in the RMC through the study of the spatial configuration resulting from the uses of the territory, using geotechnologies as technical support, chorematic representation associated with graphic semiology and critical social theory as theoretical contributions. , aiming to contribute to planning and territorial management actions in the metropolitan region that are more efficient from the point of view of the desired social equity. Cartography of uses of the territory in Metropolitan Region of Campinas (SP) - Brazil: contributions to the planning and territorial management
Description: The Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC) is composed of 20 municipalities, it has a land area of 3,792 km2 and is one of the most dynamic metropolitan areas in Brazil, concentrating important socioeconomic activities. The region has a process of accentuated urbanization in recent decades with an average rate above 97% and a population of more than three million inhabitants. The spatial configuration of uses of the territory in the MRC, resulting from various processes that elapses the social relations of production in different locations, as a mark of uneven historical and combined development of capitalist relations of production of metropolitan space, configure diverse expressions in the regional landscape. In search of understanding of this imbricated and contradictory process it is necessary to map and understand the resulting spatial configuration of the various strategies of the hegemonic agents producers of geographical space in the conduct of public policy and/or private actions aimed at appropriation of metropolitan space in accordance with the needs of the overall process of reproduction of capital, which occurs in the middle part of the population of the deteriorating quality of life and environmental characteristics of the area. This project aims to analyze the metropolis production process at MRC through the study of the resulting spatial configuration of uses of the territory, using geotechnologies as technical support, chorematic representation associated with semiology of graphics and critical social theory with theoretical contributions, aiming to contribute to this action planning and territorial management in the metropolitan area that are more efficient from the point of view of the intended social equity..

Assessment of Impacts and Vulnerability to Climate Change in Brazil and Strategies for Adaptation Options
Description: Brazil is vulnerable to present-day climate change and will be profoundly impacted by projected climate changes in the future and the sustainability of development in Brazil is strongly linked to the capacity of responding to the challenges and opportunities associated with climate change. The Brazilian water resources, population, agriculture, health, biodiversity and other key sectors are potentially highly vulnerable to climate change. Social and regional inequalities put large sectors of the population vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, the major objective of this project is to develop particular research focused on the areas of impacts and vulnerability and their application to identify adaptation options to climate change..

Geoprocessing applied to the analysis of transformations in land use in the municipality of Paulínia (SP) - 1964-2006
Description: The municipality of Paulínia is located in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC), one of the most important in the country, 118 km away from the state capital, has a territorial extension of 145 km2, an urbanization rate above 99%, an estimated population for the year 2006 of 62,624 inhabitants; The Planalto Petroleum Refinery (REPLAN) has been located in the municipality since 1972, the largest petrochemical complex in Latin America, making the municipality one of the richest in the region. However, the rapid urban growth seen in recent decades and the transformations that have occurred in the forms of land use in the municipality, which went from being predominantly agrarian to urban-industrial, have caused a series of socio-environmental problems, such as soil contamination by petrochemical products, degradation of natural vegetation, pollution of water bodies, among others, not to mention the disorderly occupation of the territory that has been the result of real estate speculative processes and the lack of more effective public planning policies. Even given these characteristics, there are few geographic studies on the reality of São Paulo, especially on the transformations that have occurred in land use. This project’s main objective is to carry out an analysis of the main transformations that have occurred in the forms of land use in the municipality in the last four decades, the period of emancipation of the municipality, aiming to contribute to a diagnosis of the main socio-environmental problems existing in the municipality. The methodology is based on the application of geoprocessing technologies in mapping and building a georeferenced database that will support quantitative and qualitative analyzes on the socio-spatial constraints that involve the process of producing space in the locality and region in order to produce knowledge with a view to territory management.

Geoprocessing Applied to the Study of Territorial Exclusion in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas: Identification and Characterization of Special Zones of Social Interest (ZEIS)
Description: Currently, socio-spatial inequalities have received increasing attention from researchers, social movements, segments of public administration and other agents in society. The feeling of insecurity that hangs in the air, mainly, but not only, in peripheral countries, leads to reflection on the causes and characteristics of this phenomenon, as well as the proposal of measures and the elaboration of strategies to face it, both on a local and national scale. global. In this context, the production and analysis of data, at diverse and comprehensive levels of detail, as well as methodological guidelines for correlating these data and producing information, have been identified as one of the most important initiatives to enable better knowledge of the territory and, in this way, subsidize public policies that can effectively contribute to the promotion of social inclusion. Following this trend, this research project’s main objective is to carry out a study on the process of territorial exclusion observed in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, through the identification and characterization of Special Zones of Social Interest (ZEIS), as significant contradictions occur in this territory. in the form of appropriation of geographic space by different social groups, resulting in forms of exclusion such as the segregation of less favored populations in favor of those more affluent in terms of socially produced wealth, which, in turn, increases sociopolitical conflicts in around the dispute in/over the territory. The work methodology foresees the application of geoprocessing technologies for handling cartographic and sociodemographic data, according to approaches for preparing the social exclusion/inclusion map and defining zones of social vulnerability, proposed in the literature on the subject, as an instrument for producing data to be used in performing quantitative and qualitative analyzes for id.

Mapping of socio-environmental impacts around the Salto Grande Dam in the municipality of Americana (SP)
Description: The main objective of the research project is to map the socio-environmental impacts around the Salto Grande Dam, in the municipality of Americana (SP), as a way of contributing to the construction of a diagnosis of the impacts arising from forms of use and occupation in the area. The methodology to be used foresees the use of geotechnologies in identifying impacts, with due verification and recording in field work, in the preparation of thematic maps and analysis of results. The Salto Grande Dam, built in 1949 for the purpose of hydroelectric generation and use, is located in the Atibaia River basin, currently serving the inhabitants of the municipalities of Americana, Paulínia and Nova Odessa who also use the source for activities leisure and water collection for irrigation. The forms of use and occupation of the surrounding land, especially those intended for urban use, have been intensifying in recent years and causing various types of impacts on the dam (siltation, pollution, extinction of fauna, among others), which compromises its functions as an important water resource in the region. Hence the need for updated studies on the topic that seek to help understand the socio-environmental processes that occur in the area.
