Researcher Yohanna Juk, who works at the Research on Research and Innovation project, participated in the Digital Transformation Society International Conference held at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope in Naples, Italy, on May 23 and 24. The researcher presented the paper titled “Integrating Artificial Intelligence with Sustainable Development Goals: a review of policy and research literature,” co-authored by researchers Bernardo Pereira Cabral, Karen E. F. Pinto, and Evandro Coggo Cristofoletti, who are also part of the project.
Research on this topic falls under Front 1 of the Research on Research and Innovation. The paper aims to connect the impact and alignment of research directed towards Artificial Intelligence with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and related policies. “To this end, we explored the potentials and limitations of using the Overton database. The research was very well received by the session participants, and I was also able to present a bit about the Research on Research project itself,” says the researcher.
Sustainable Development Goals
Various fronts of the Research on Research and Innovation seek to integrate their investigations with the SDGs. The SDGs consist of 17 global goals established by the United Nations General Assembly, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The 17 goals are broad and interdependent, containing sub-items that must be achieved. The SDGs cover issues such as social and economic development, including poverty, hunger, health, education, global warming, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanization, the environment, and social justice.
One of the findings of the paper presented by Yohanna at the Conference indicates that, although research utilizing artificial intelligence focuses on SDGs related to health, energy, and infrastructure, policies tend to prioritize themes related to economic growth, education, and justice. This divergence may suggest the need for a more unified approach, aligning AI technological advancements with policy-making that supports all SDGs.
